I can't run with earphones.

I know that many of you like to pound pavement to P Diddy, or run to Run DMC, or jog to Jessica Simpson (OK that last one is stretching the credibility of alliteration), but I am at a loss to see the attraction of running outdoors to music. Do the Rocky music all you like on the treadmill, but outdoors??? There's nothing I like better than being cast into wide open nature and running without technopop to annoy me...
Did an easy two miler today, back home in Galway.

  1. I love music and it makes running more bearable. I wouldn't run without it.

  2. I do run a lot with music but i do sometimes leave it at home so i don't become a slave to it the same goes for the GPS. It's nice to run without distraction.

  4. I think it depends on where you are. If I'm running anywhere nice then I go without mp3, but when I'm plodding my usual routes it stops me being disturbed by the sound of my own wheezing.

  5. I only ran to music a few times when doing some boring mile uphill repeats in training for the World Masters Mountain Running Championships, to take my mind off the pain!
At home I run through beautiful countryside where I'm intensely aware of all the sights, sounds, smells and movements around me. Earphones would be a gross distraction. Maybe it's different for those who run in towns and cities.

  6. What travellinghopefully said reminds me: When I've run without music (because my iPod battery ran out mid-run), all I can hear is my heavy breathing and my feet slapping heavily on the ground. Very distracting.

Although, I did do an experiement and ran without music one day on purpose. I blogged about it here: The no music experiment

  7. jogblog, 'The no music experiment' is hilariously funny. I love your posts!
I use my mp3 player when I'm commuting, to cut out the sound of mobiles ringing (or Cock a doodle dooing), game thingys beeping, customer announcements, wheels rattling, engine noises, people talking in foreign languages I can't understand - and things like that....
